Offensive Systems
The 5-1 System
One setter, five hitters. The setter plays all 6 rotations. The most common system at competitive levels because it gives the team one consistent setter.
The 6-2 System
Two setters who set from the back row. When a setter rotates to the front row, they become a hitter and the other setter (now in back row) sets. Gives you 3 front-row attackers at all times.
Quick Offense
- 1 set (quick): Fast set right in front of the setter. The middle hitter is already in the air.
- Slide: The middle hitter runs behind the setter and hits while moving laterally.
- Back set: Setter delivers the ball behind them to the right-side hitter.
- Combination plays: Multiple hitters approach at the same time to confuse the block.
Out-of-System Play
When the pass is bad and the setter can’t run the offense normally, hitters need to adjust — get a high set and create their own shot. This separates good hitters from great ones.
The best offense starts with a good pass. A perfect pass gives the setter all options. A bad pass limits everything. That's why passing is the most important fundamental.
