Defensive Systems
Perimeter Defense
Defenders position along the sidelines and end line. The middle of the court is left open for the digger behind the block. Good against hard-hit balls.
Rotational Defense
As the ball is set, defenders rotate to predetermined positions based on where the attack is coming from. More complex but covers more court.
Blocking Schemes
- Bunch block: All three front-row players start in the middle and spread to where the set goes
- Spread block: Start wider, each blocker responsible for their zone
- Read blocking: Watch the setter, then move to the ball. Slower but more accurate.
Serve Receive Formations
- W formation: 5 players in a W shape — good for beginners
- 3-person receive: Only 3 players pass serves — more common at competitive levels
- 2-person receive: The two best passers handle everything — elite level
Defense wins rallies. The team that digs more balls extends rallies and creates more scoring opportunities. Defense is effort + positioning.
