10-Minute Serving Drill
Goal: get the serve over the net consistently, then add placement.
1) Toss practice — no hitting (2 min)
- Stand in serving position. Toss the ball with the non-hitting hand.
- The toss should go 1-2 feet above the hitting hand, slightly in front.
- 10 toss-only reps. A bad toss = a bad serve every time.
2) Underhand serve (for younger players) (3 min)
- Step forward with opposite foot, swing arm straight through, contact the ball with the heel of the hand.
- 10 serves. Focus on getting it over.
3) Overhand serve (4 min)
- Toss with the non-hitting hand, draw the hitting arm back (like throwing), contact the ball at full extension with an open hand.
- 10 serves. Power comes from the toss and the step, not the arm.
4) Target serving (1 min)
- Pick a zone (left, center, right). 5 serves to a specific target area.
The toss is 90% of serving. If the toss is bad, catch it and start over — don't swing at a bad toss.
